Inspired by the name of the plant where the band use their rehearsal space, The Amsterdams release their second album, Electromagnetica on their label Post Pop Records. The album was produced by Electric Brother and the band themsleves, and mastered by Harris Newman at GreyMarket Mastering Studio in Montreal, Canada.

With a band name not associated with Romania, The Amsterdams were founded in Bucharest in 2006. During their first five years of activity, they have released an EP and debut album, performed at festivals such as B’estfest, Peninsula and Stufstock, Romania, and venues in the Netherlands, UK, Austria, Czech Republic and Italy. In 2010, the band also performed at the opening of The Cranberries concert in Bucharest.

Back in 2004 when the indie-rock new wave first hit the scene, The Amsterdams caught onto a trend that was yet to appear on Romania’s music scene. Although the original lineup has changed since then, they are a somewhat long-standing presence in their own country and have remained constant in delivering a British indie pop feel to their act.

The band have varied their sound on the new album, ranging from Interpol-like lazy melodies to sounding like British Sea Power, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Radiohead, The Maccabees, Elbow, and Wild Beasts all merged into one. The album’s lyrics cover the whole range of subject matters from disaster to nostalgia.

With Electromagnetica, the band worked on their rough edges, sharpened their songwriting and brought the groove back on. While it could be argued they have become slightly commercial, The Amsterdams have made their tunes more approachable to an audience who know good music when they hear it.
